Dunhuang Xiao Ting - Gansu food in Shanghai
Sunday, March 9th, 2008The first thing that drew me into Dunhuang Xiao Ting was the cleanliness. I was searching for a place for a quick cheap lunch and the DXT just looked sparkling clean. I saw was the little beef burgers fly by to a neighbouring table and, even though I was a lone diner, I ordered a basket as a starter, 5¥ for 4. The buns are a bit like challah, crispy fried on one side and coated with sesame seeds.
The filling was sparse but tasty and consisted of a slice of beef, some lettuce and a smear of hoisin like sauce. For me these are so disgustingly moreish, I feel like I could eat 3 baskets full. Check out the other sandwich bun offerings as well a plate of fried baozi I saw on a neighbouring table, and a sandpot soup that seemed to be all the rage at about half the tables in the place.
Although my soup noodles were tasty sour and hot (forget how much, but cheap), the Xinjiang lamian (10¥) were even better, slightly chewy and dressed with a typical tomato and bell pepper sauce.
Da pan ji (big plate chicken, 36¥ small plate), that western Chinese classic was tasty if a bit greasy, not as spice heavy as some versions. The same was true of the Sichuan garlic aubergine (8¥) where steamed eggplant strips were dressed with a soy, vinegar and oil sauce. Yang rou chuan (lamb kebabs, 5/13¥) were more deep fried than grilled but nicely spiced and the meat of a good quality, with a nice proportion of fat. Also try the two teas in the cooler machines next to the bar, the one with 3 hanzi chrs is an apricot flavoured one and is very tasty.
- Service: 3/5 (unilingual Chinese but with a translated menu)
- Food: 3.5/5 (greasy but tasty and inexpensive)
- Atmosphere: 3/5 (for a cheap Chinese resto AMAZING, otherwise just ok)
- Overall: 3.5/5 (I’m a sucker for those buns and want to try more!!)
110 ¥ for 3 with drinks.
