UBC Mandarin Immersion Class to require “previous knowledge of French”

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

Students were, perhaps unsurprisingly, few.

“This exciting weekend is for those interested in practising Mandarin in an immersion setting. All classes take place in the target language under the guidance of experienced instructors. Lunches, a dinner and socio-cultural activities are part of the program. Classes are offered at all levels, but some previous knowledge of French is required. The weekend begins Saturday at 10:00 am and ends Sunday at 3:30 pm. The $250 fee includes tuition and some meals. For more details, please view www.languages.ubc.ca or call us at 604-822-0800.”

Here’s a shout out to Mark at www.likealocal.cn, a super site that teaches you how to eat like a local on the streets of Shanghai. His great presentation at Petcha Kutcha last Friday drove me back to look at his site again and inspired me to get out there and eat like a local instead of heading to Element Fresh, which isn’t that good anyway. It also made me sigh that Shanghai wasn’t Singapore, land of streetfood. *sigh*.

Grouprecipes.com

Ever dream of Myspace with a serious food angle? Me too. Well, I joined Group Recipes a few months back and have been posting more and more lately (here I am for those interested) . It’s not really on the same tech level as Myspace but hey, give it some time. I was/am a big fan of the Yahoo groups cooking sections (indiancooking is by far one of the best) and this is a high tech version. My one gripe, and this is a small one, is the posting of untested recipes and non proprietary pictures. Some people have either been hoarding and testing recipes for years or are posting stuff they havn’t tried. The same goes for pictures, some of which have obvious water marks on them. Enough said. Otherwise the site seems full of really interesting foodies with lots to offer and they even have a space for posting your own homemade cooking TV shows. Great going guys.
